About Web Harmonium

Web Harmonium is a free, browser-based Indian harmonium that lets you play instantly from any device — desktop, tablet, or phone. No app download, no installation, no account required. Just open web-harmonium.me and start playing.

Why We Built Web Harmonium

The harmonium is central to Indian music — bhajan, kirtan, qawwali, ghazal, and classical vocal practice all depend on it. But physical harmoniums are expensive, heavy, and unavailable in many parts of the world. Millions of Indian diaspora singers in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia cannot easily access the instrument they grew up with.

Web Harmonium bridges that gap. A singer preparing for a kirtan session can pull up their phone, set their Sa, and warm up their voice in seconds. A student can practice scales and ragas during a lunch break. A teacher can demonstrate melodies during an online lesson without shipping a 10-kilogram instrument.

Technology

Web Harmonium is built with Astro, React, and the Web Audio API. The sound engine uses sample-based synthesis from a recorded harmonium WAV file, with pitch-shifting via the Web Audio detune parameter to produce authentic tones across the full keyboard range. The site is statically generated for maximum performance and SEO, with the interactive player loading as a client-side React island.
